Introduction to the Essentials of Criminal Law

Criminal law in Canada is governed predominantly by federal law, under the Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-46.  The Criminal law course consists of an introduction to criminal law including an overview of the criminal process, the principles of criminal liability, the elements of specific crimes, and statutory and common law defences. Included in this research guide are references to important resources to start your research such as Halsbury’s Laws of Canada and the Canadian Encyclopedic Digest; relevant online databases for caselaw and legislative research; journal indexes; and catalogue links to texts on different aspects of criminal law held on Reserve in the John and Dotsa Bitove Family Law Library.
