Health Surveys

Canada

Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), available on ODESI under Health.
Canada's most important general population health survey with questions on acute and chronic illnesses as well as factors that influence health. The CCHS includes annual components covering specific topics in more detail, such as the 2012 Mental Health survey and the 2015 Nutrition and Food Guide component

There are a number of other Canadian health surveys and data collections available on ODESI under Health including the Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey, the 2012 HIV/AIDS Attitudinal Tracking Survey, and the Discharge Abstract Database, a collection of information extracted from hospital patients' discharge records

U.S.

National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)
This is the American survey that is most comparable to the CCHS. Includes modules on alcohol use and physical activity and has good coverage of mental health

National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)
Nutrition, food consumption, physical measurements, and general health questions. Comparable to the CCHS nutrition modules and also overlaps the Canadian Health Measures survey (which is restricted)

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (CDC)
Mental health and substance use as well as factors predisposing towards chronic conditions.
