Databases

The Library Catalogue (Omni) searches scholarly journals on Black history and literature that Western Libraries subscribes to or owns. This is a good starting point, but for more focused searching, you need to turn to specialized databases such as the ones listed below.

America: History and Life with Full Text
Covers the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistoric times to the present. From 1989 onward, the database also includes citations to reviews of films, videos, and non-print media.
Black South African Magazines
Contains 50,000 pages of extremely rare, yet historically significant magazines, written and targeted specifically for Black African audiences between 1937 and 1973.
Black Studies Center
Consists of scholarly journals, commissioned overview essays by top scholars in Black Studies, Black literature indexes, and The Chicago Defender newspaper from 1910-1975.
Historical Abstracts with Full Text This link opens in a new window
Provides abstracts to scholarly articles, books, and dissertations on world history from 1450 to the present. Includes link-outs to online full text.
Humanities International Complete
Provides full text of articles from over 1,200 journals in all areas of humanities research, as well as references to content from many other types of publications.
JSTOR
Provides access to full-text, full-image scholarly journal articles. Contains historical holdings of research across many subjects. There is a 5-year embargo on most JSTOR content.
MLA International Bibliography
A subject index for books and articles published on modern languages, literatures, folklores, and linguistics. There are over 1.7 million citations from more than 4,400 periodicals and 1,000 book publishers.
