Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Desktop GIS

ArcGIS is a common GIS software program with a global reach. As a graduate student, staff member, or faculty at Western or the affiliates, you have access to the software through the University's Educational Site License.

To obtain a copy of the software, an installation kit can be borrowed from the ITS Administration Office, SSB 4300.

Quantum GIS (QGIS)

QGIS is a free and open source GIS software program that allows you to "create, edit, visualise, analyse, or publish geospatial information" (qgis.org). This program can run on a variety of operating systems - Windows, Linux, Mac, and in the future, Android.

To download QGIS and to access documentation, visit http://www.qgis.org.

Western Libraries Map and Data Centre has 5 workstations and two group collaborative technology rooms equipped with both ArcGIS and QGIS.
