We recommend that you use a personal account, not an account at your institution, so that you can keep your profile for as long as you wish.

Once you've signed into your Google account,

  1. Open the Scholar profile sign up form
  2. Confirm the spelling of your name
  3. Enter your affiliation (i.e. Western University), interests, etc.

We recommend that you also enter your Western University email address and authorize Google Scholar to display your affiliation to Western University.  Later, check your email to complete the verification process. This will authorize Google Scholar to display your affiliation with the Western University as “verified.”

On the next page, you'll see groups of articles written by people with names similar to yours. Add all articles that you have written.

Keep in mind your articles may be in several different groups, and some groups may occasionally include articles by several different authors. If you publish under several different names, you may need to do several searches to add all your articles.

Once you're done with adding articles, it will ask you what to do when the article data changes in Google Scholar. You can either have the updates applied to your profile automatically, or you can choose to review them beforehand. In either case, you can always go to your profile and make changes by hand.

Finally, you will see your profile. This is a good time to add a few finishing touches:

  • Upload your professional looking photo, if you wish
  • Visit your university email inbox and click on the verification link
  • Check the list of articles for accuracy
  • Once you're completely satisfied, make your profile public

Your profile is now eligible to appear in Google Scholar when someone searches for your name.

What if you've used the wrong Google Scholar account?

If you have been asked to create a Google Scholar profile for your advisor (or some other researcher), you may find you've accidentally created it in your own Google Scholar account.

To fix this situation:

  1. Login to your advisor's Google Scholar account.
  2. Add any of your advisor's articles, etc. that you may have accidentally added to your own Google Scholar account.
  3. Login to you own Google Scholar account.
  4. Click "Settings"
  5. Click "Delete or recover your Scholar account"
  6. Confirm that you are sure you want to delete the account. After doing this, you will have 30 days to change your mind.
