How to create an ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID)

To register with ORCID and create an Open Researcher and Contributor ID:

  1. Go to https://orcid.org/register
  2. Use your uwo.ca email address as your Primary email.  e.g. jpater22@uwo.ca
  3. Provide your name as it appears in your publications. You may include as many forms as you see.
  4. Add any personal or professional websites you want to show here.
  5. Add other researcher IDs such as Scopus Author ID or ResearcherID.
  6. Add an alternate email address, like a gmail address, to help with accessing your account if you forget your password.
  7. DO NOT SHARE passwords. If you need an administrator to assist with your account, invite them as a TRUSTED INDIVIDUAL

Give access to Trusted individuals

One or more Trusted Individuals can be granted access to manage an ORCID by its owner. While trusted individuals do not need to be researchers, they do need their own ORCID. Read more about Trusted Individuals.

Sign into your ORCID account and go to directly to Go directly to https://orcid.org/trusted-parties or click on your name on the top right-hand corner of the page

2. Click on Trusted parties on the dropdown menu

3. Scroll down to the Trusted Individuals section. In the search box, enter either the ORCID iD, email address, or name of the person you want to make a trusted individual

4. Click on the Search ORCID for trusted individuals button

5. If you enter an ORCID iD or email, a pop-up box will ask you to confirm that you want to add that user as a trusted individual. Click on Add as trusted individual to confirm.

If you search for a trusted individual by name, a list of matching ORCID records will be listed. Click on +Add as trusted individual next to the name of the user you wish to make a trusted individual.

If you need to check that you have the right person, click on the user's ORCID iD to be taken to their public ORCID record

After you have added a trusted individual to your ORCID record, their name and ORCID iD will appear in the Trusted individuals section.

How to add other information to your ORCID profile

For each of the following areas, click on the + (Add button) or link, and fill in the fields that appear:

Employment:

  1. In the Institution field, type the name of the employer, e.g. "Western University".
  2. A drop-down menu will appear. Select the correct institution.
  3. Include start date (and end date if applicable). This helps ORCID display the current affiliation.
  4. Keep Employment public because it helps others find the profile via a name search in the ORCID registry.

Funding:

  1. Click Funding
  2. Click Add funding
  3. Click Search & link
  4. Select DimensionsWizard
  5. Grant authorisation
  6. Go to the Dimensions website
  7. Search for grants received and link them to the ORCID record

Other (optional) fields:

Information may be added regarding education, qualifications, invited positions, distinctions, membership(s) and service.

How to link a Scopus Author ID and an ORCID

To link your Scopus Author ID to  your ORCID:

  1. Login to ORCID
  2. Go to the Works section
  3. Select Add works
  4. Select Search & link
  5. Select Scopus Elsevier from the list
  6. Select authorise
  7. Follow the steps provided there to associate your Scopus profile and works with ORCID

How to add works

There are multiple ways to add works (e.g. publications, presentations) to a profile.

Use Search & link. This will automatically populate the publications that you find through each wizard: Scopus Author ID, The Lens, CrossRef Metadata Search, etc.

See more information about connecting various third-party services.

How to add works manually

If you can’t find your publications using any of the wizards described above, or if you have unique publication types, you will have to add your works manually – this may be the only way to add conference posters or presentations.

  • To add a work manually, start from the Works header, click +Add, then Add manually
  • A box will appear enabling you to complete for a manual work citation.
  • Add any unique identifiers and as many other fields as possible when adding a work.
  • The system will check the identifier's source to see whether it is valid. If it is not valid, you will receive an error message. You can still save a work even if an error message is displayed.

See ORCID's works metadata article for a description of all fields.

For more information see ORCID's online help.

How to import files

You can also add BibTeX to import your publication list from Google Scholar or other sources that export  BibTex files.
You can import citations in the form of BibTeX (.bib) files - more detail can be found on the ORCID website.
To import a BibTeX file (.bib):

  • Select Add BibTeX to import a list of publications using a BibTeX file (.bib).
  • Next, select Choose BibTeX file to import and then select the BibTeX (.bib) file you want to import.
  • You will see your  publications in a list. Select save (click the disk icon) next to the desired publication to add the work individually, or choose the Save all button to add all of the publications at once.
  • The publications will then appear listed under the Works section of your record, and you will be listed as the source.

How to merge two ORCIDs into one account

In order to avoid future confusion and ambiguity, please only have one ORCID. Because ORCID identifiers are designed to be persistent, obsolete ORCIDs will be deprecated, not completely deleted. Data on the deprecated account will be deleted, and the ORCID will point to your primary record, both in the user interface and the API. An example can be seen here.
CLICK here for steps for merging duplicate profiles.

How to export work from ORCID

  1. Start from the Works section of your record.
  2. Select the work(s) you would like to export.
  3. Under "Actions", select “Export works” to export just the selected work(s), or "Export all works" to export all the works.
  4. Review the selected works, then click “Export selected works to BibTeX” at the bottom of the page. The export will begin immediately and the BibTeX file will automatically download to your default download folder.

See how to export to BibTeX.
