Research Impact

What is SciVal?

SciVal is a tool for research analysis, based on Scopus datasets. SciVal provides visualizations of research performance of research institutions and their researchers from around the world.

SciVal turns publication and citation data into insight. It allows us to:

  • Benchmark Western’s research performance against peer institutions worldwide
  • Analyze collaboration networks and research trends
  • Identify strengths, gaps, and emerging opportunities for strategic growth

Individual researchers can use SciVal to:

  • Benchmark Yourself – Compare your own publication output and citation impact against peers at your institution, in Canada, or globally.
  • Track Collaboration Networks – See who you are co-authoring with, what institutions and countries you are connected to, and identify potential new collaborators.
  • Identify Emerging Topics – Explore research areas where you’re already publishing or discover adjacent areas where you might want to publish next.

Using SciVal

SciVal requires users to have an account, but any Western faculty, staff, or student can create one with their Western University email address. If you already have a Scopus or ScienceDirect account, you can use it to log in.

If you are off campus, log in to your SciVal account and then follow the prompts to check access through your institution, choose University of Western Ontario (Western University) as your institution, and authenticate with your Western WebLogin.

Once logged into SciVal, we recommend consulting the Quick Guide to SciVal available towards the bottom of the homepage. Elsevier's SciVal LibGuide is also a helpful resource.
